Mitochondrial Eve Problems

The use of cellular mitochondria mutations that pinpoint an origin date and a common group of female ancestors for modern humans has run into a small problem. A group of Danish researchers have found a man who appears to have inherited a substantial portion of his mitochondria from his male parent. Previously, this was thought an impossibility. The use of mitochondria in genetic archeology has always proceeded from the assumption that mitochondria evolved only matrilineally so now the possibility that there could be patrilineal lines of descent is problematic. But even if the Danish work is duplicated, the overwhelming tendency in Nature favours matrilineal descent and so shouldn’t throw off the common female ancestor conclusions of the theory, but merely obfuscate the exact date. But the date for the common male human ancestor may go through some radical rethinking. It’s another kink in the “Out Of Africa” theory, and unforseen mitochondrial complexities have also bollixed up some pet mammalian evolutionary theories.

Mitochondria is cool in general. It’s the remains of bacterial invaders absorbed into symbiosis within our ancestors’ cells billions of years ago. Perhaps unluckily for variety within the porn industry, one drastic effect of incorporating mitochondria within ourselves meant the number of possible reproductive genders was generally cut down to the binary female/male roles we see in the plant and animal kingdom. Fungi, which evolved a totally different response to mitochondrial invasion, make do with thousands of reproductive genders. And I note that last year the first genetically altered posthumans were created using mitochondrial engineering.

Prodigy And Speed Bad For Mice Shock!

So I see many people are horrified that those bastards! Al Qaeda could shoot videos of them gassing dogs for research. So what, then, am I to make of this news that British scientists have been dosing mice with crystal methamphetamine and playing Prodigy tracks at the little furry blighters until the mice dance themselves to death? Apparently, there is some science buried in here someplace, but for the moment it eludes me…

Online Music Sharing And Trust Networks

So I read that the music companies are now pumping out faulty versions of popular file sharing tracks to consume people’s bandwidth. This kind of technological sabotage has a limited shelf life. The street finds its own solutions, as the cyberpunks are wont to say, and within a short space of time I expect to see a new generation of file sharing applications emerge that have the notion of trust built into them. Something like EBay’s trust system, but anonymous, and based on community “votes” for the legitimacy (or not) of checksum-verified tracks. Perhaps using public keys created exclusively for that purpose. All the required technology bits and pieces are already out there so it’s just a matter of time.

Ashcroft’s Gulags

Bizarre yet confirmed story here: the Bush Gang is setting up a “high-level committee” to decide which American citizens it can declare as “enemy combatants” and intern permanently without trial in detention camps. Apparently they are getting jittery now that the American Bar Association has condemnded the US government’s detentions as “illegal” and a Federal District Court Judge has ordered them to reveal the detainee’s names. Apparently even the Feds are leery of refusing to cooperate with a Federal Court and so one solution is to declare several thousand Americans as “enemy combatants”. In this case they can be held under military jurisdiction in detention camps safe from interfering do-gooder constitutional advocates and fans of legal justice. I note further that even Time and Newsweek are saying that there seems to be no substance to the radiological bomb rumours around Jose Padilla and that this story was concocted by Ascroft to get a little fear going on and justify denying Padilla access to legal representation. Apparently, they’ve decided to imprison Padilla without trial for decades in order to “scare him” into talking. Are these the actions of people interested in defending freedom, or merely in defending their own freedom to rule?

Irish Porn Stars

I suddenly realised that Google entry for Irish Porn Star or Irish Porn Stars is very lacking. So I’ve decided to do a little bombing of Google and make these guys my Irish Porn Stars. Or Irish Porn Star if you wish. Actually, I think Google also likes it if I refer to them as the Irish Porn Stars or the Irish Porn Star. Now I just wait a couple of weeks and this entry should show up within Google.

Beer Goggles Confirmed

Anyone who doubts that alcohol is just another psychoactive substance similar to cannabis or cocaine will be upset to find that Scottish scientists have confirmed the reality of the perceptual hallucination known as Beer Goggles. Apparently, drinking only a moderate amount of alchohol renders others around 25% more attractive on a normalized scale. Apparently, alcohol is synthezised in the body into the GABA neurotransmitter, which acts on the nucleus accumbens as a depressant. The nucleus accumbens, part of the basal ganglia, is also targeted by cocaine, amphetamine, and most central nervous system stimulants or depressants. There’s some overlap with these dopamine-based drugs, but alcohol (and similar drugs such as GHB and Heroin) seem to have their very own distinct psychoactive reward system:

The alcohol reward system also includes the VTA [ventral tegmental area] and nucleus accumbens and affects the structures that use GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) as a neurotransmitter. GABA is widely distributed in numerous areas of the brain, including the cortex, cerebellum, hippocampus, superior and inferior colliculi, amygdala, and nucleus accumbens. The VTA and the nucleus accumbens are two structures involved in the reward system for all drugs, including alcohol and tobacco.

Afghan War Crimes

This is a dynamite story by Newsweek concerning the ongoing investigation of the mass graves discovered in Afghanistan. It seems they are quite recent, and that the thousands of people there were slaughtered and buried by Northern Alliance warlords (some now entrenched within the Afghan Government) and it’s difficult to see how this could have taken place with US forces’ knowledge or involvement. Of course, news of human rights abuses by US allies during the current phase of the Afghan War is nothing new. I see now why the Pentagon is anxious to get immunity for its forces against war crimes prosecutions by the International Court. It puts those desperate jail riots into perspective: they were fighting for their lives (after all, the CIA operatives there told the Pashtuns to “talk or die”). Newsweek sums it up:

It may not be easy for Americans to summon much sympathy for Taliban or Qaeda prisoners. But the rules of war cannot be applied selectively. There is no real moral justification for the pain and destruction of combat if it is not to defend the rule of law. The line is tough to hold even in a conventional conflict. In a proxy war, its much more difficult. The dead at Dasht-e Leili are proof of that.

Old Skool Posts

So my archives are all screwed up and I tried deleting some posts around that time and reformatting them, to see if that cleared the problem. No go. But at least I got to look at that fat guy again.

Society’s Conceits

All nations are imagined communities, and maintain cohesion through spectacular feats of imagineering. In the US, two of the prevailing ideological weapons deployed whenever “malcontents” suggest restructuring society in ways that may run counter to the wishes of its rulers are:

  • Social mobility is greater in the US, and the prevailing direction is upward — which rocks compared with those class-bound Europeans.
  • Corporate productivity is greater in the US, especially when compared with those lazy Europeans.

Apparently, according to a new book, The World We’re In by Will Hutton, Editor of the UK’s left-leaning The Observer newspaper. This extract sets out to demolish the social mobility myth, while this one extols the virtues of non-American, Euro-centric capitalism.

Fat Apron Redux

So several people have asked did I have any photos of the Fat Apron Lady. Well, not quite, but there is this guy…
