Cough Cough

I have to face facts, after several days of hoping I just had a common cold, the symptoms have not gone away and I now realise I am infected with the damn influenza virus. Fever, chills, fatigue, muscle pain, loss of appetite, air passage constriction, slight photophobia, nausea. I hate flu, every single time there’s an epidemic I catch it. Apparently the stats say around 20% of people every year catch it, but I guess I am supremely vulnerable to all flu mutations. When the next Pandemic hits I am a goner.

Local Perspective

[Iran] will, come hell or high water, build an atomic bomb. I doubt the US can do much to stop it … Iranians have some 15,000, perhaps, 20,000 so-called Badr troops and entrenched intelligence-apparatus inside Iraq formed of Iraqi Shiites, Arab-speakers and sitting quiet cells … the 150,000 American troops in Iraq are “hostages”. They move out of protected garrisons, to which they return. Administrator Paul Bremer is hiding inside Saddam Hussain’s palaces, seeing few Iraqis, engaged in a tense relationship with his own American commanders and visiting Washington more often than the streets of Baghdad … US diplomacy meanwhile is paralysed. In the whole Gulf region and Middle East, and as far as Indonesia and Pakistan, US diplomats, are sequestered in their heavily protected embassies.

Valley Girl, Like, Totally Occupying Iraq

serving her country. She is the daughter of Michael Ledeen, the Iran-Contra luminary, AEI scholar, and all-around capo in the neocon mafia. She’s 29, a freshly-minted M.B.A., with little to no experience in war-torn countries. But as an advisor for northern Iraq at the Ministry of Finance in Baghdad, she is, in essence, helping shape one quarter of that nation’s economy … the younger Republicans in Iraq spend much of their time plotting against the Democrats. “Everything is seen in the context of the election, and how they will screw the Democrats,” said one CPA official. “It was really pretty shocking to hear them talk.” “They are all on the campaign trail,” said another official. “They see this as a stepping stone to a better job in the next Bush administration.” “I don’t always know if they are Republicans,” said yet another senior CPAer. “But what is clear is that they know nothing about development, and nothing about transitional economies.” … It’s also driven journalists … to joke: “They don’t call it the Republican Palace for nothing.”

Simone also led at least one campaign to stifle free speech in her Brandeis University, campaigning to ban a left-wing speaker from her College.

Simone’s been rising quickly through the vast right-wing neocon economic apparatus. Once upon a time she worked a cushy job at “telecommunications company Linsang Partners (a big-iron FCC corporate welfare pure play). One prominent Linsang Partner is the delightful James Woolsey (ex-director of the CIA who says the US is engaged in “World War 4″ and who closely missed being appointed Iraq Pro-Consul in place of Bremer or Garner).

Anyway, the valient Simone was promoted to a VP at the improbably named Furchtgott-Roth Economic Enterprises (a classic neocon looney bin lobbying gang that campaigns against open telecommunications, sustainable development and environmental regulation).

Mr Harold Furchtgott-Roth is an ex-FCC Commissioner and, as it happens, Ms Diana Furchtgott-Roth is a resident fellow at the equally looney American Enterprise Institute, where Ledeen’s kooky father Michael Ledeen also holds court (along with such notables as the always-creepy Richard Perle and Lynne Cheney. Ms DFR seems to think that women should be happy they are paid only 74 cents on the dollar compared with men, and that women somehow choose to be underpaid and under-valued.

But back the main topic! Simone was recently privileged enough to attend Bush’s plastic turkey flyby:

Condi Rice and Andy Card were there, too. I met them both- Condi Rice asked if we were really surprised- she was getting a kick out of it. We all said ?Absolutely!? Andy Card repeated my name and said it was nice to meet me … In other news, winter has officially arrived here. The rain has started and all the sand and dust has turned to mud. My pants are perpetually dirty- splattered with mud- and my boots are looking very rough indeed! War is hell … Hillary Clinton is coming here tomorrow. For her sake I hope I don?t see her. I might do something crazy like spit in her direction.

Meanwhile, her Iran-Contra arms-for-drugs-dealing father Michael Ledeen is a pillar of the neocon establishment and continues to write reams of overblown shite about the Middle East, such as this:

In the midst of a heated transatlantic debate over Iraq, one crucial question is on everyone?s mind : how best to catalyze the implementation of an environment of trust, democratic legitimacy and accountability, as the minimal requirements for a functional region fit for the 21st century and global stability.

Cluster Fucked The use of

Cluster Fucked

The use of cluster bombs in populated areas caused more civilian casualties than any other factor, said [Human Rights Watch] In addition, 50 “decapitation strikes” by warplanes targeting Iraqi leaders after intercepts of satellite telephone calls killed dozens of civilians but none of the intended targets … aside from the cluster bombs and decapitation strikes, coalition forces tried to be careful and precise to avoid killing noncombatants … researchers found a clear contrast between the civilian death rates in planned attacks on fixed sites and in assaults on targets of opportunity. “They were very, very careful and incredibly accurate when it came to planned targets” … But as U.S. soldiers encountered distant fire on the ground, they shot back with imprecise cluster munitions that carpeted an area with bomblets. “Hundreds of people were killed as a result”.

Iraqi armed forces violated international humanitarian law by abusing the red cross and red crescent emblems … during the battle for al-Najaf, fedayeen came to the Hay al-Hussain Ambulance Center. The ambulances there and in other parts of Iraq were white with red crescent emblems on the front hood and rear door and sometimes on the side door. The fedayeen told the center?s staff that they knew of injured people who needed help and climbed in an ambulance with their guns. ?They got in . . . and then took part in the battle. They used [the ambulance] as a cover to reach the field of battle.

Let’s Do It Again

David sent me this video of US Marines executing a wounded Iraqi POW.

Then I read this.

Upstairs, he said, he found the Special Republican Guard member with the grenade launcher next to him. He said he ordered the man to stop, forced him to turn around, and removed his black beret. He shot him twice in the back of the head. He took the man’s military ID as a souvenir. Outside, the man’s partner was escaping. Covarrubias said he chased him down and killed him as well. He took the man’s ID and his AK-47 assault rifle. “This,” he said in the interview, holding up the two ID cards, “is justice.” … Covarrubias is on a 30-day medical leave. He likely will retire from the Marine Corps next year after 21 years of active duty. He hopes, he said, to join the Metropolitan Police Department.

Take The Money And Run

A third of the soldiers trained by the U.S.-led occupation authority have quit, defense officials said Wednesday. Touted as a key to Iraq’s future, the 700-man battalion lost some 250 men over recent weeks as they were preparing to begin operations this month.

That’s A Lot Of Dung

Humans have been changing the global climate since thousands of years before the industrial revolution … Beginning 8,000 years ago, atmospheric levels of carbon dioxide began to rise as humans started clearing forests, planting crops and raising livestock … Methane levels started increasing 3,000 years later [this] staved off what should have been a period of significant natural cooling … The changes also disrupted regular patterns that dominated the 400,000 years of atmospheric history … “You have 395,000 years of history, which sets some rules, and 5,000 years that break those rules”.

Statistical Unemployment

Iraqi Health Ministry officials ordered a halt to a count of civilian casualties from the war and told workers not to release figures already compiled … The health minister, Dr. Khodeir Abbas, denied that he or the U.S.-led occupation authority had anything to do with the order … Dr. Nagham Mohsen, the head of the ministry’s statistics department, said the order came from the ministry’s director of planning, Dr. Nazar Shabandar, who told her it was on behalf of Abbas. She said the U.S.-led Coalition Provisional Authority, which oversees the ministry, didn’t like the idea of the count either.

Burying The Hatchet

So it seems that to meet the political goal of securing an apparent Iraqi “free” election before the next US Presidential election, the Pentagon in Iraq has been asked to eliminate that pesky Iraqi resistance by any means necessary. Their solution? Multicultural death squads.

Move over Task Force 20! Now we have the more impressive Task Force 121, trained by Israeli assassination specialists, advised by Farouq Hijazi, the former head of external operations for the Mukhabarat (Saddam’s brutal intelligence agency), and with planning by none other than our old friend, Crusader General Boykin (who believes Muslims worship Satan).

Who says old enemies can’t get along?

Israeli advisers are helping train US special forces in aggressive counter-insurgency operations in Iraq, including the use of assassination squads against guerrilla leaders … One of the planners behind the offensive is a highly controversial figure, whose role is likely to inflame Muslim opinion: Lieutenant General William “Jerry” Boykin. In October, there were calls for his resignation after he told a church congregation in Oregon that the US was at war with Satan, who “wants to destroy us as a Christian army”.

One of the key players on the new American-Iraqi intelligence team as Farouq Hijazi, a Saddam loyalist who served for many years as the director of external operations for the Mukhabarat, the Iraqi intelligence service. He has been in custody since late April. The C.I.A. man said that over the past few months Hijazi “has cut a deal,” and American officials “are using him to reactivate the old Iraqi intelligence network.”

Poppy Daze

The spurt in violence in Afghanistan in recent months has generally been attributed to the resurgence of the Taliban and al-Qaeda. However, aid workers in Afghanistan are saying that it is warlords with connections to the production and trade of narcotics who are behind many of the attacks … Warlords and crime cartels control this lucrative industry … Governments back home in the NATO countries are reluctant to get their soldiers drawn into tackling drug trafficking as this would make the troops targets of the all-powerful drug syndicates. Therefore, even if they come on a field of poppy or an opium warehouse, the troops are under instructions not to act against it.

“Narco-terrorism” has become an increasingly entrenched factor in the violence that’s meant to keep southern and eastern Afghanistan ? a key opium poppy region ? off-limits to outside assistance … “The revenue from the poppy trade in Afghanistan is more than all the humanitarian aid combined” … “It’s impossible to separate out what’s factional fighting, what’s Taliban activity and what’s drug trafficking” … The fact that drug-trafficking revenue has soared since the U.S. push into Afghanistan has put the Bush administration on the defensive. “You ask what we’re going to do and the answer is, ‘I don’t really know,’” Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld said recently.
