Now, usually these <a href=\"http:\/\/www.e4fun.com\/chain.html\">chain<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.breakthechain.org\/\">emails<\/a> are just plain false and are basically the most primitive form of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cs.rutgers.edu\/~watrous\/chain-letters.html\">email<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.silcom.com\/~barnowl\/clevo\/start.htm\">worm<\/a> known. But amazingly, in <i>some<\/i> limited circumstances (old-fashioned PBX, bad security setup, etc) this can work. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.urbanlegends.com\/ulz\/x90pound.html\">This article<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.urbanmyths.com\/brands_attscam.html\">this one<\/a> explain the background. This chain contains the faintest nugget of truth at its core and is therefore probably more pernicious than a completely false one. I am reminded of the old <a href=\"http:\/\/www.legends.org.za\/arthur\/craig01b.htm\">Cancer<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wish.org\/home\/frame_chainletters.htm\">Kid<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.urbanlegends.com\/classic\/craig.shergold\/\">Needs<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/urbanlegends.about.com\/library\/weekly\/aa102997.htm\">Cards<\/a> ones that were so virulent a few years back.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Someone sent me a note about some &#8220;scam&#8221; involving land phones and how dialing &#8220;9&#8220;, &#8220;0&#8220;, &#8220;#&#8221; will let someone make long-distance calls using your phone account.
