{"id":1267,"date":"2002-12-20T20:12:00","date_gmt":"2002-12-21T00:12:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.meehawl.com\/Blogfiles-wp\/?p=1267"},"modified":"2002-12-20T20:12:00","modified_gmt":"2002-12-21T00:12:00","slug":"gangs-of-new-york","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.meehawl.com\/Blogfiles\/2002\/12\/20\/20\/12\/gangs-of-new-york\/","title":{"rendered":"Gangs of New York"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A good review of the new Scorsese movie here, noting that it glorifies the Irish immigrants&#8217; &#8220;struggles&#8221; while eliding over their incredible racism and brutality as they ethnically cleansed black people from New York for a generation or so following the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=draft.riots\">Draft Riots pogrom<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/critics\/cinema\/?021223crci_cinema\">they also present the riot as an outgrowth of the Irish fight against the nativists. The tone of what we see is, at first, celebratory?it&#8217;s a virtuous revolt, the Bolsheviks coming down the street?and then, as Union soldiers fire on the rioters, tragic. The actual rioters, however, burned down a Negro orphanage and strung up black men on lampposts and set them on fire<\/a><a href=\"..\/Webstore\/Draft%20Riots\/For%20The%20Love%20Of%20Fighting.html\"> (the orphanage doesn&#8217;t show up in the movie, the lynchings only in passing). It was blacks who suffered most in this tragedy.
