Some might say this is a case of manufacturing the news, or maybe consent. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2003\/03\/25\/opinion\/25KRUG.html?pagewanted=print&#038;position=top\">Others see significance<\/a> in the fact that Clear Channel&#8217;s increasing monopoly over what Americans hear and see is currently being reviewed by both Congress and the FCC. They set up the rallies, encourage listeners to attend, and also supply &#8220;anti-French&#8221;, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/news.google.com\/news?num=100&#038;hl=en&#038;q=clear+%2Bchannel+dixie.chicks\">anti-Dixie Chicks<\/a>&#8220;, and &#8220;God Bless&#8230;&#8221; and &#8220;One Nation Under God&#8221; posters.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/headlines03\/0319-01.htm\"><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Some of the biggest rallies this month have endorsed President Bush&#8217;s strategy against Saddam Hussein, and the common thread linking most of them is Clear Channel Worldwide Inc., the nation&#8217;s largest owner of radio stations &#8230; &#8220;I think this is pretty extraordinary,&#8221; said former Federal Communications Commissioner Glen Robinson, who teaches law at the University of Virginia. &#8220;I can&#8217;t say that this violates any of a broadcaster&#8217;s obligations, but it sounds like borderline manufacturing of the news.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2003\/03\/25\/opinion\/25KRUG.html?ei=1&#038;en=ac4208f5be1efd64&#038;ex=1049801912&#038;pagewanted=print&#038;position=top\"><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The vice chairman of Clear Channel is<br \/>\nTom Hicks, whose name may be familiar to readers of this<br \/>\ncolumn. When Mr. Bush was governor of Texas, Mr. Hicks was<br \/>\nchairman of the University of Texas Investment Management<br \/>\nCompany, called Utimco, and Clear Channel&#8217;s chairman, Lowry<br \/>\nMays, was on its board.
