There&#8217;s this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.loebner.net\/Prizef\/loebner-prize.html\">contest<\/a> every year to see who can write the best <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cs.flinders.edu.au\/Research\/AI\/LoebnerPrize\/1999c00.txt\">chat bots<\/a> to imitate people.<\/p>\n<p>This all stems from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.time.com\/time\/time100\/scientist\/profile\/turing.html\">Alan Turing&#8217;s<\/a> observation that surely one good way to know a machine was truly &#8220;intelligent&#8221; was that it could hold a conversation with a real person and that person would be unable to distinguish whether in fact their chat partner was real or synthetic. This of course neatly sidesteps the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.u.arizona.edu\/~chalmers\/zombies.html\">Zombie Problem of Psychology<\/a> &#8212; in that even if someone gives all the right answers how do you <i>know<\/i> there really is conscious experience happening within their head? Or in fact if there is such a distinct thing as conscious experience?<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cs.flinders.edu.au\/Research\/AI\/LoebnerPrize\/1999c00.txt\">transcript of a typical session<\/a> with one of these chat bots. Now, the level of repartee this software program evidences here is <b>so far<\/b> above what passes for communication in typical chat rooms &#8212; all that <i>a\/s\/l<\/i> and <i>LADEEZ????<\/i> mindlessness &#8212; that I have no option but to conclude that most people online are, in fact, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stanford.edu\/group\/SHR\/4-2\/text\/collins.html\">morons who would fail the Turing Test<\/a>. They are not even zombies&#8230; zombies can have some <a href=\"http:\/\/tbhl.theonering.net\/films\/brain_dead.html\">style<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is interesting and kind of sad.
