From the simple early beginnings of the likes of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Core_War\" target=\"_blank\">Core War<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Conway%27s_Game_of_Life\" target=\"_blank\">Life<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Creatures_(artificial_life_program)\" target=\"_blank\">Creatures<\/a>, we now have the unfortunately <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/search?num=100&amp;hl=en&amp;safe=off&amp;q=spore+drm+securom+-wikipedia&amp;btnG=Search\" target=\"_blank\">DRM-laden Spore<\/a>. Providing people are willing to consent to the monitoring and potential control of their computing device according to the whims of the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/EA_Spouse\" target=\"_blank\">Electronic Arts<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/EA_Spouse\" target=\"_blank\"> Software Gulag<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/search?num=100&amp;hl=en&amp;safe=off&amp;q=cdfreaks+securom&amp;btnG=Search\" target=\"_blank\">Sony&#8217;s SecuROM<\/a>, they can now act as creators, creating entire virtual worlds and creatures therein, and sharing them with the global hive mind. The game eschews real-world random mutation and natural selection and instead deploys a <em>tour de force<\/em> symbiosis of computing and multimedia to enable people to practice intelligent design in a manner aceptable to the anti-science inquisitors at the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Discovery_institute\" target=\"_blank\">Discovery Institute<\/a>. And what manner of wonderful creatures do we as nascent godlings bring forth?<\/p>\n<p>httpvh:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=i6c4e57K2AQ<\/p>\n<p>httpvh:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=0rLknbFcJb4<\/p>\n<p>Yes&#8230; <a title=\"2,000 so far\" href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/results?search_query=spore+penis\" target=\"_blank\">Penis Monsters<\/a> &#8211; truly the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theregister.co.uk\/2006\/10\/27\/bbc_horizon\/print.html\" target=\"_blank\">Singularity Is Near<\/a>, oh yes.<\/p>\n<p>Brian Aldiss was right all along when, in his <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Helliconia\" target=\"_blank\">Helliconia<\/a> epic (one of the greatest science fictions of the 20th century), he predicted how the advanced inhabitants of Earth would devour news from the Universe only as a giant reality show and then, finally, how the remaining advanced civilisation would collapse into savagery and sexual perversity. Its last relics? The hunting gangs of genetically engineered, aggressive, semi-intelligent and rapacious dildo organisms.
