{"id":939,"date":"2002-03-08T16:55:00","date_gmt":"2002-03-08T20:55:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.meehawl.com\/Blogfiles-wp\/?p=939"},"modified":"2002-03-08T16:55:00","modified_gmt":"2002-03-08T20:55:00","slug":"a-gps-to-call-their-own","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.meehawl.com\/Blogfiles\/2002\/03\/08\/16\/55\/a-gps-to-call-their-own\/","title":{"rendered":"A GPS To Call Their Own?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So after the Pentagon <a href=\"http:\/\/www.igeb.gov\/sa\/faq.shtml\">removed<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eaglegps.com\/tutorial\/gps\/default.htm\">GPS&#8217;s<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eaglegps.com\/support\/faq\/faq_sa.htm\">Selective Availability<\/a>, the maximum GPS accuracy is typically within <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eaglegps.com\/support\/faq\/faq_gps.htm\">10 to 20 meters<\/a>. <a href=\"http:\/\/gipsy.jpl.nasa.gov\/igdg\/\">Differential GPS<\/a> can reduce this to <a href=\"http:\/\/gipsy.jpl.nasa.gov\/igdg\/system\/index.html#accuracy\">minute levels<\/a>, very useful for calling in airstrikes and pinpointing installations, and so on.<\/p>\n<p>So it&#8217;s probably no surprise that the the European Union&#8217;s plans to build their own GPS system, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.galileo-pgm.org\/\">Galileo Project<\/a>, met such <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/hi\/english\/world\/europe\/newsid_1718000\/1718125.stm\">stern resistance from the US<\/a>, with Deputy Defence Secretary Paul Wolfowitz asking EU defence ministers not to go ahead, saying it could complicate US satellite-assisted warfare and furthermore could be more easily used by anti-US military forces.<\/p>\n<p>The EU has has now <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/hi\/english\/world\/europe\/newsid_1862000\/1862779.stm\">rejected<\/a> the latest message from the US, a State Department exhortation to forgoe development. Interestingly, the latest rebuff was framed as an anti-monopoly stance, that compeition in satellite navigation would be good for business.<\/p>\n<p>Apparently, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/Archive\/Article\/0,4273,4366576,00.html\">Osama is responsible<\/a> for this latest rebirth of the European space industry.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps more worryingly, in a related development a UK company was awarded the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spacenewsfeed.co.uk\/2002\/current.html#Paradigm\">&#8220;<b>Skynet 5<\/b>&#8220;<\/a> military communications system contract.
