That quickly developed into either a fight between <a href=\"..\/Blogfiles\/2002_03_24_WeekArchive.php#11288891\">evil Taliban vs Forces Of Light And Good<\/a>, or a classic Afghan north\/south <a href=\"..\/Blogfiles\/2002_03_10_WeekArchive.php#10606038\">Uzbek-Tajik vs Pashtun<\/a> conflict. Depends on your point of view&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Now today I read that <a href=\"http:\/\/story.news.yahoo.com\/news?tmpl=story&#038;u=\/ap\/20020404\/ap_wo_en_ge\/afghanistan_571&#038;printer=1\">Karzai has rounded up <\/a><a href=\"..\/Webstore\/Afghan%20War\/Hundreds%20arrested%20in%20Kabul%20in%20apparent%20plot%20against%20Afghan%20government,%20foreigners.html\">hundreds of people<\/a> in &#8220;an apparent plot against the government&#8221;. Conveniently, most of those doing the rounding are Uzbeks and Tajiks, and most of those rounded up are Pashtuns, including people loyal to Afghanistan&#8217;s most recent, elected, non-Taliban President, Hekmatyar&#8230;<br \/>\n<i><a href=\"http:\/\/story.news.yahoo.com\/news?tmpl=story&#038;u=\/ap\/20020404\/ap_wo_en_ge\/afghanistan_571&#038;printer=1\">The arrests are also likely to inflame tension between Hekmatyar&#8217;s largely Pashtun followers and the northern alliance, which is dominated by ethnic Tajiks and which controls the interior and other key ministries &#8230; Pashtun <\/a><a href=\"..\/Webstore\/Afghan%20War\/Hundreds%20arrested%20in%20Kabul%20in%20apparent%20plot%20against%20Afghan%20government,%20foreigners.html\">leaders may interpret the arrests as an attempt to stifle their moves toward Pashtun unity in advance of the loya jirga.<\/a><\/i><\/p>\n<p>Of course, there are those who say that the whole thing really is all <a href=\"http:\/\/story.news.yahoo.com\/news?tmpl=story&#038;u=\/020404\/7\/1cmgf.html&#038;printer=1\">about <\/a><a href=\"..\/Webstore\/Afghan%20War\/SAY%20ANYTHING.html\">oil<\/a>:<br \/>\n<i><a href=\"http:\/\/story.news.yahoo.com\/news?tmpl=story&#038;u=\/020404\/7\/1cmgf.html&#038;printer=1\">It&#8217;s mostly about oil. 9-11 or no 9-11, the U.S. would never have invaded Afghanistan minus its <\/a><a href=\"..\/Webstore\/Afghan%20War\/SAY%20ANYTHING.html\">oil component. Don&#8217;t we deserve 75-cent-a-gallon gas in return for losing four planes and two big buildings?<\/a><\/i><\/p>\n<p>And those who <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spinsanity.org\/columns\/20011015.html\">say oth<\/a><a href=\"..\/Webstore\/Afghan%20War\/Truth%20and%20Dissembling%20on%20Central%20Asian%20Oil%20Politics.html\">erwise<\/a>:<br \/>\n<i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.spinsanity.org\/columns\/20011015.html\">There is no evidence of the supposed US-Pakistan decision.  In fact, there is much evidence of indecision in US policy up to and after 1994, rather than some plan to &#8220;install a stable regime&#8221;.  There is similarly no evidence that State Department (or the US government in general) helped provide arms or funds<\/a><a href=\"..\/Webstore\/Afghan%20War\/Truth%20and%20Dissembling%20on%20Central%20Asian%20Oil%20Politics.html\"> to the Taliban.
