Last Laugh Of The KLF?
So the old dreams of the pop pranksters the KLF (Kopyright Liberation Front) seem to have come true as I read in the NY Times that “Mash Ups” — mixed-up blends of disposable pop tunes — the newest “hot” commodity in the music business. I doubt these new mashers will have anything like the panache of the KLF pranksters though. It’s amazing to think that in the early 1990s the KLF were the biggest selling UK pop group and, at the height of their success, they chucked it all in to go away and slag off modern art and burn a mllion pounds for kicks. I always thought their Brit Awards exit (Screaming through a thrash metal version of their song, killing and gutting a sheep and dowsing the audience in its blood (darn lawyers intervened), shooting the audience with machine guns (blanks!) and chanting The KLF Have Left The Music Industry, then deleting their entire back catalogue and burning all the remaining merchandise) was a classic… right up there with Johnny Rotten stalking off the San Francisco stage during the Sex Pistols tour (Ever Get The Feeling You’ve Been Had?).
