Prison Gulags Downsizing

Prisons are big business and now, in these recessionary times, have to downsize like any other business. Facing a cash crunch, the States simply can’t affo
rd to transfer as much cash to the private enterprises and payrolls, and so they are cutting back on the supply of raw material - inmates.

One story I saw today put it in context: Rise in Inmates Slowed in 2001 :

The U.S. inmate population in 2001 rose at the slowest pace in almost 30 years … States facing budget shortfalls are now more sensitive to the cost of imprisoning people who break the law … The three states with the highest rates of incarceration — Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi — in the past two years have tried to limit the growth of their prison populations.

This extract sums up for me the ludicrousness of the prison system in the US.

So one of the reasons the US incarcerates more of its population per capita than any other is simply that it can afford to do this, and in the process make big bucks for those companies involved in the business.

It also runs counter to how crime statistics correlate with economics. Forget about increased incarceration rates and mandatory sentencing, the main reason for the drop in crime rates in the 90s was the economic boom — when there are more jobs there is less opportunity and incentive for people to do crime (I am excepting corporate crimes here). Recessions happen and crime ticks up. You might expect, then, that prison populations would rise. And if they were rationally and logically related to the severity of crime, this would be so. But we see from the above example this model is seriously flawed.

So I have to say to myself — if and when this recession ends, will we see a big decline in crime rates, yet paradoxically accompanied by a big rise in prison populations? I think so.

Bush Channels Orwell

This local paper just about summed it up.

Our Long National Nightmare Of Peace And Prosperity Is Finally Over

RobotWisdom pointed out that this Onion piece from wayback was weirdly prophetic:

George W. Bush assured the nation in a televised address Tuesday that “our long national nightmare of peace and prosperity is finally over.” … Bush also promised to bring an end to the severe war drought that plagued the nation under Clinton, assuring citizens that the U.S. will engage in at least one Gulf War-level armed conflict in the next four years … Once again, we will enjoy mounting debt, jingoism, nuclear paranoia, mass deficit, and a massive military build-up.”

Bait For The Jesus Fish Redux

So Plastic has this nice story about these anti-Semitic Christian Rapture novels and how amazingly popular they are. Now if only all those damn fundies would get beamed up into outer space or whatever then there’d be less crap books in the world.

I always liked the old BBC Quatermass TV serial, where people gather together in huge crowds and this alien beam sucks them away into the sky. Turns out aliens seeded earth long ago and have returned to “harvest” their crop. All the true believers basically get liquidised and freeze-dried before being squirted off to become the heavenly equivalent of Galactic Ramen. Bring it on!

He that soweth the good seed is the son of man: the field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares are the children of the wicked one; The enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels. As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire; so shall it be in the end of this world. the son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity; And shall cast them into a furnace of fire there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth. Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear. (Matthew, 13: 37-43 King James Version)

QUATERMASS:”My evaluation, Chuck - here it is. Forget about trying to get through to it.. The ripe crop can’t appeal to the reaper. I think this is the gathering time. The human race is being harvested.”

UN Ready To Accuse Pentagon Of Wedding Strike Coverup?

Pretty heavy story here that the UN is finalising its report on the recent Afghan Wedding Party Massacre. According to “UN sources”, a special US cleanup team disposed of much of the evidence and there are discrepencies in the Pentagon account of what happened that suggest some degree of fudging.

Michael Jackson Bankrupt?

So maybe there’s some substance behind Michael Jackson’s newfound ethnic heritage and his readiness to battle those Satanic meanies at Sony? According to this story, he’s broke, owes hundreds of million of dollars, is behind on his payroll, and without a big new hit has no way to pay off his current debts. It also describes his ongoing spending, which makes Elton John seem frugal. Apparently, he’s also blown a huge portion of his money on settlements to forestall child abuse allegations and payouts to various ex-wives and hired wombs.

Bypassing The Eight Amendment

The 8th Amendment to the US Constitution inconveniently enough prohibits “cruel and unusual punishment”, including torture. The fact that US investigators have been secretly transferring some of its prisoners to countries that routinely practice torture, including notable Axis of Evil states such as Syria, has been known for some time. Indeed, in some deranged sections of the US media it’s become actively fashionable to talk about the “effectiveness” of certain torture techniques. But this usually goes unexamined, so i was therefore pleased to see a recent CSM article explaining the new US eagerness to subcontract out torture (more good effects of globalization?), and tying the US’s recent decision to join with Syria in opposing a new UN anti-torture regulations. Gosh darn it, that could wipe out the export market!

Saudi Arabia On The Brink?

So apparently, Saudia Arabia is descending further into the shitter, with Islamist protests spreading, Westerners living in armed compounds, and internal dissent rising. It’s eerily reminiscent of the last days of the Western-supported Shah in Iran.

It’s Not Fat, It’s Muscle!

So this woman overfed her 3-year-old child until he was “morbidly obese“: 120 pounds at age 3. Then, when he was taken into protective foster care, she brought him McDonalds during a supervised visit. No information on her size, unfortunately.

Pre-Emptive Strike Against Iran Looming?

So this article about Iran’s nuclear power plant (now nearing completion with Russian help) puts the recent curtailment of tacit support for Iran’s “reformist” regime into perspective. Under the new Bush Gang’s first-strike policy, either a miracle happens and the Iranians agree to bend over and lube up, or the US will have to attack the Iranian facility from the air. Of course, they could use Israel as their stooge, as they did when Israel attacked Iraq’s power plant in 1981 using American-made F16s. I’m assuming that the brief Israeli Government statement made then still holds: Under no circumstances will we allow an enemy to develop weapons of mass destruction against our people. Because Israel is the only nuclear power in the region — it understandably does not want the potential terror of its weapons of mass destruction to be diminished.
