The actual rioters, however, burned down a Negro orphanage and strung up black men on lampposts and set them on fire (the orphanage doesn’t show up in the movie, the lynchings only in passing). It was blacks who suffered most in this tragedy. The filmmakers, hoping to memorialize the immigrant Irish as the soul of a new nation, went down the wrong path, then pulled back, only to end in confusion, halfway excusing an awful event.
I’d always liked that theory about how Gervase and his diligent medieval monks in Canterbury saw the Moon crater Bruno being created, but it sadly it turned out to be hokum. I note with some unsurprised distaste that last year’s slow trickle of extra-judicial arrests of Muslims has turned into a mass arrests of people from Muslim countries who are being asked to “register” at special facilities for processing. So having seen the new Two Towers Tolkien movie, I have to sympathise with the Orcs. They have all the coolest technology: crossbows, gunpowder, siege engines, metallurgy, remote surveillance, and airborne units. They use all the best tactics: defensive formations, scouts, flanking, diversions. And above all else they have a huge advantage in numbers. Against this Tolkien’s Whitefolk of the West seem to possess only badly made longbows and swords, virtually no military discipline, zero intelligence of their enemy’s numbers or deployment, and incredibly bad perms. And yet the Orcs keep losing. If I was them I’d get new leaders.
