The Best Laid Plans
So way back in 1992, Wolfowitz and others wrote this in one of their wet dream journals:
NATO continues to provide the indispensable foundation for a stable security environment in Europe. Therefore, it is of fundamental importance to preserve NATO as the primary instrument of Western defense and security, as well as the channel for U.S. influence and participation in European security affairs. While the United States supports the goal of European integration, we must seek to prevent the emergence of European-only security arrangements which would undermine NATO, particularly the alliance’s integrated command structure.
Now I read increasing coverage of the “new” Euro axis of France, Germany, Belgium and Luxembourg that is designed to act as a counterweight to NATO and seems to be annoying the Bush Gang and their disciples almost as much as Syria… and it doesn’t even really exist yet!
Personally, I find it supremely ironic that the military supremacists in the Pentagon have in a sense provoked this deepening of the European unification project in a way that runs exactly counter to their stated strategic intentions. And as usual in all European unification projects, the UK is left on the outside, peering in and tut-tutting. So it goes.
