“I expose to men the origin of their first, and perhaps second, reason for existing.” Leonardo da Vinci wrote these words above his drawing “The Copulation” in about 1493. [His] sketch shows a transparent view of the anatomy of sexual intercourse as envisaged by the anatomists of his time. The semen was supposed to come down from the brain through a channel which can be seen in the spine of the man.

    While it may be the case that it is now known that semen does not come down a channel from the brain, it would certainly be interesting to see some studies about what does change in the brain chemistry and nervous system post ejaculation (in women as well as men). Such observed sensual changes – I can see leading to Leonardo’s superimposing a “channel” of some sort while not in fact tubular. Eagerly awaiting BMJ’s next article…
