Thunderbirds Are Go
So my server was down for longer than I anticipated… I added a new 800GB RAID-5 disk subsystem and wrestling with the various components was tough. This server runs on an old-yet-exquisitely-tuned dual P3 BX motherboard from 1997, a SCSI card from 1996, some old-but-amazingly-fast 15K RPM enterprise SCSI disks, and some ancient registered DIMMs. I am nothing if not cheap. But adding a new state-of-the-art RAID array proved most challenging because I had to play musical chairs with the PCI slots to get the various BIOSs to install. For the record, ensure that any Promise BIOSs load before any Adaptec BIOS, and when loading multiple Promise BIOSs, ensure that the larger memory aperture BIOSs install first.
I still haven’t worked out all the kinks… like for example the damn PC only works now on its side. When I stand it upright it complains about a keyboard error. There must be some kind of short somewhere that I’ll have to find. But at last, finally, I will be able to put most of my music and stuff online, rather than shuffling through disks. I only hope that Soulseek comes back and hasn’t been shut down for good…
Nothing more gratifying to a hard core windows user/tinkerer than upgrading an old windows box and then getting it to work. Usally takes 3-10 days, anything less is an outright reason for celebration. That said, is a RAID really necessary? =)
you get what you pay for — much touted PC-hardware flexibility & compatibility. Try upside down 😉
