Doomed At Birth

So it looks like the US is now backing away from the idea of a democratic, inclusive post-Taliban government and is going for the old reliable US-approved repressive military dictatorship, AKA the Northern Alliance. Right, that’s going to work well, I have no doubt. The Taliban emerged partly as a result of disgust with the campaign of raping and looting the Northern Alliance indulged in the last time they seized power.

The strategy was clouded partially by concerns over efforts to foster the establishment of a post-Taliban government including all segments of Afghan society.
Pentagon officials said they have now stopped waiting for a political solution and have stepped up aerial raids designed to help the Northern Alliance, aiming more bombs at Taliban troop locations in recent days.
