Taliban Beginning Guerilla War

The rugged and inhospitable Afghan terrain is perfect for small groups of guerrilla fighters to mount lightning strikes and then melt away � as the mujahideen of the 1980s showed when they stood up to, and drove out, the might of the Soviet army.

The Taliban say their withdrawal from much of Afghanistan in recent days has been a “tactical retreat”. Analysts say that while this is to a large extent propaganda, the Taliban do seem to have decided to pull out of key cities without a fight.

Their allies in Pakistan say the Taliban are retreating, regrouping, and changing their tactics.

“We think a guerrilla war will be started now. I think this is the beginning of the war,” said Abdul Aziz Khan Khilji
