”We thought it was a little weird,” said Prof. Mason, a reproductive biologist who spends six weeks every spring studying the Manitoba snakes as they emerge from their dens. He and his colleagues had come up with several theories to try to explain what they call ”she-male” behaviour — including one hypothesis that some males had a better chance of mating if they pretended to be females and snuck into mating balls.
