Afghan Hedge Schools

This is a nice article on the secret schools for women that operated in Kabul during the Taliban regime. The system where these penniless female teachers were secretly paid tiny sums by other women to teach their girl children reminds me of the old hedge schools in Ireland, where Catholic teachers and students met illegally to learn during the harshest years of anti-Catholicism there.
