WTF?!? Chickens Being Routinely Injected With BSE-Infected Beef Extracts

That series of fast-food commercials by the short guy from Seinfeld expounding on the virtues of “unadulterated” chicken nuggets impinged my consciousness, but was not really high on my priority list. Then I read this article, which describes how food regulators in the EU have discovered that some chicken meat is routinely injected with beef proteins to add bulk. And it’s a safe bet the source beef for this chicanery isn’t coming from prime cuts.

Do these people ever learn? BSE became epidemic when Big Meat cleverly decided to turn ruminants carnivorous. Now instead of removing the infectious agents from the food chain, they seem determined to reinfect as many animals as possible. Food safety authorities have been aware of the problem since 1997. But they have only recently developed DNA tests sophisticated enough to pinpoint the beef proteins. Who knows what other juicy industry surprises lie hidden and waiting in people’s favourite mystery meats?
