Preemptive Attack On Iraq Now More Likely

It was always a dodgy idea for the unilateralists in the Bush Gang: ask the UN to come down heavy on Iraq. I get the sense they were relying on Saddam to be as obstinate and pigheaded as, well, as they are. In a sense, they are projecting their moral deficiencies onto their enemies. But the damn towelheads won’t play along. The Iraqi talking head, Tariq Aziz, conveyed a letter to the UN with their surrender, and also has been holding press conferences, telling everyone that what’s really at stake here is oil. Many people agree, not least of them these guys in the Washington Post, who point out that currently much of the Iraqi oil drilling concessions have been bought by French, Russian, and other non-US interests. However, in a full-blown war with Iraq, and a newly installed and compliant Iraqi government would would negate these concessions.

All this UN nonsense is damn inconvenient to the war hawks. Were they to allow the UN to work, for multilateralism to succeed, their entire ideology would be upset. To allow damn liberal negotiators to defuse international disputes without violence and warfare was why the UN was founded, and that’s why the ascendent champions of the idea of unchallanged US hegemony cannot allow it to succeed. Sure enough, now I read that Bush and Rumsfeld are getting desperate: they want to hit Iraq now, before the UN can act to send in its inspectors. In their game plan, Iraq cannot be allowed to surrender to the UN, conditionally, but instead must surrender to the US, unconditionally. Only then do Iraq’s oil concessions become spoils of war.

Of course, a ground war within Iraq must also proceed out of military necessity. After 12 years of bombardment by US and British warplanes, Iraq has become one of the poorest countries in the world. Several years ago, US military sources were already confiding that they were running out of suitable targets. “We’re down to the last outhouse,” they admitted.

I do indeed find it ironic that a country which postured so strongly to the Japanese unannounced attack on Pearl Harbour (as part of a Pacific conflict that was motivated chiefly by Japan’s thirst for oil supplies in the face of US embargo) the appetite for preemptive attack should be so strong. Then again, I don’t think the civilians in Dresden, Hiroshima, or Nagasaki were given advance warning either.

The argument that Iraq was a sponsor for the World Trade Center attacks also rings hollow, especially considering the latest preliminary report from the US Congress over September 11th. It points out that US intelligence agencies had warnings as far back as 1998 that some “Arabs” would attempt to fly airliners into the Twin Towers. With the benefit of hindsight, they are able to show how awareness of an impending terrorist spectacular was building all through the summer of 2001. But despite this extensive examination, they haven’t found any evidence that Iraq was involved.

As some pragmatic commentators have pointed out, considering that the US is currently under attack from some violent Islamist groups, surely starting a war against a secular, non-Arab, strictly regional, tinpot state such as Iraq can only be a distraction. While US attention is captivated by the phoney War on Terror in Iraq, the real terrorists are under the radar, watching keenly and closely, with intellects vast and cool and unsympathetic, and slowly and surely drawing their plans.

jesus can’t give cleanup child abuse

Checked the logs this morning and last night someone found my site by entering this weird phrase into Google: jesus can’t give cleanup child abuse. Your guess is as good as mine…

Moving Is Such Sweet Sorrow

God I am so tired from packing for the big move this weekend. Why are all my books still paper? WHy haven’t they been Napsterized yet. On the plus side, I did finish digitising all the CDs so they can go. I am going to keep DSL running at this location for a week or two… hopefully the newer, faster service will be up and running in the new apartment by then. Maybe by then, also, all my moving box bruises will have faded. Right now I look like an advert for De Sade.

Guns Are Bad, M’Kay?

So some conservative website linked directly to my Chelsea Clinton Goes Goth thingy. This kind of deep linking really bugs me, especially when there are thousands of hits with no possibility of follow on because they skip the nav bars. So I changed the image file they were pointing at into a jokey anti-gun poster. Check it out.

Baraka A Go Go

Went to see Baraka last night with some friends and it was so lush: a new 70mm transfer print. So much detail it’s overwhelming. Digital projection really does suck slightly compared with 35mm, and so much compared with 70mm. It’s a pity they didn’t release Lord of the Rings on 70mm — that really would be something.

Earth’s Second Moon

I just found out Earth has a second moon, called Cruithne. There may be a third, but most people think it’s space junk. And according to this paper, there are two more asteroids in “resonant orbits”. But unfortunately they are called 1998 UP1 and 2000 PH5. Unless and until they come up with some cool Celtic names for these, they aren’t going to get much PR.

Mandela Speaks Out

So Mandela is not as naive as it seems in other reports. In this Newsweek interview he speaks pretty plainly. Bush et al don’t like the UN because they perceive it to be run by black people and gets in the way of some of their unilateral wars. And it’s okay for Israel to have nukes, because it’s “white”, whereas it’s not okay for Iraq to have nukes, because it’s “black”. And Mandela can’t trust Cheney, because Cheney fought to keep Mandela imprisoned.

Of course, Mandela is way too late to stall this war. It’s already begun. Indeed, in a sense it never ended. US and British planes have been flying attack runs, and frequent bombing runs, every week for ten years. And now close on 400K US and NATO troops encircle Iraq. What’s being debated in the US now is really the deployment of the invasion force, and the divvying of the political and economic spoils afterwards. Seymour Hersh noted this last December, and I noted it last October.

we have been bombing Iraq whenever we feel like it for the last 10 years. Nobody likes that, least of all the Iraqis, and but lot of other people besides … We have accepted responsibility for the death of 500,000 Iraqi children – Edward Peck, former US Ambassador to Iraq

With Us Or Against Us

When I was coming up, with what was a dangerous world, we knew exactly who the they were. It was us versus them, and it was clear who the them were. Today we’re not so sure who the they are, but we know they’re there. – King Bush 2nd, pre-September 11th 2001.

When America’s great enemy suddenly disappeared, many wondered what new direction our foreign policy would take. We spoke, as always, of long-term problems and regional crises throughout the world, but there was no single, immediate, global threat that any roomful of experts could agree upon … All of that changed five months ago. The threat is known and our role is clear now.” – Grand Vizier Cheney, post-September 11th 2001.

This is a great article that examines how the Bush Junta — stuffed full of Viagra-embalmed Reagan-era cold warriors — was lost, utterly bereft of any moral compass, before those nasty people in the Axis of Evil came along to give them a new lease on life. And help them to deprive USians of many liberties they had formerly and foolishly considered their birthright. Meanwhile, I hope for the warmongers’ sakes that nobody on the “other” side is as smart as this guy.

Wilful Ignorance?

Interesting story here about a dissident Taliban politician who apparently, hearing about the imminent September 11th attacks, conveyed a warning to the US consul general in Pakistan. Apparently, he was disregarded because of “warning fatigue”. I hope that’s all it was, but the more I hear about the shadowy machinations and secret manoeuvring last summer, the more I have my doubts. I don’t think it’s as completely paranoiac as this guy, but some people knew then and know now a lot more of what actually went down: who the key hijackers really were instead of their stolen identities, what international intel agencies lent a hand, who actually masterminded it instead of Al Qaida, how the bombs and weapons were really smuggled onto the planes. And so on. One year on and it seems the truth is largely still out there.

Meanwhile, some people have been analyzing the money trail of the September 11th hijackers very closely, and it seems the trail leads to some current US “allies”.
