Why Bother With The UN?
So given the Bush Gang’s obvious antisocial sociopathy, why are they bothering with the UN at all? Why put so much effort into this endless quest for UN legitimisation of their military adventures? I figure it’s all about troops and money to pay for the Day After the invasion. Apparently, the Bush Gang is afraid to put a pricetag in dollars on how much Iraq will cost, and is running scared from Congressional committees trying to figure this out. And perhaps more crucially, they don’t want to be forced to garrison several tens if not hundreds of thousands of vulnerable support and logistics troops in that volatile region for the many years of construction. So basically, they want to go in bombing and force the UN to station peacekeeping troops there afterwards, much as the Germans and the Turks are helping to prop up the Karzai government in Afghanistan. So all this politicking in the UN is about trying to sucker the UN into taking the post-Saddam bruising and terror attacks that will inevitably follow, leaving the US to move its aggressive front-facing troops onwards to Iran or North Korea.
Meanwhile, I note the Pentagon is warning the media that if they stay in Baghdad they will be very likely to be killed by a US bombing campaign far more deadly than the “surgical strikes” of 1991. I think they’ve figured that Baghdad will be too expensive to capture using ground troops without a terrible campaign of slaughter from the air ala Dresden, Hamburg, or the Tokyo firestorm (one of the most ruthless and barbaric killings of non-combatants in all history).
