Let’s Hear It For The Looters!
So I read endless US media props that everything in Iraq is now “secure” and the people are “rejoicing”. Uh-huh. I think in Iraq, paying homage to those with the biggest tanks is probably a well-honed reflexive survival tactic. Yet just today I also read that the fighting, mayhem, and looting in Baghdad and Basra has intensified to such a degree that the Red Cross and other relief agencies are suspending humanitarian operations. I guess the military definition of “secure” differs from most people’s. Again, that endless bon mot of army logic, We had to destroy the village in order to save it, never ceases to ring true. I am also amused that, at least for the moment, Iraqi looters, rioters, and vigilantes are being f’ted by the US media as valiant souls yearning to be free… or something like that. Meanwhile, just try doing that in LA or Oakland and see how far you get.
