Day of Surprises

Day of surprises. First Pat Buchanan agrees with me, then I find that criminal weasel wannabe Mussolini character Silvio Berlusconi — the current tinpot Prime Minister of Italy — has also been thinking about globalisation and protests…

He says there’s a link between Islamist terrorism and the anti-globalisation movement… a “strange unanimity” between them. Both [are] the enemies of western civilisation.

Well, I wouldn’t go that far. In a positiviely Bush flight-of-fancy, he went on to say that we should be conscious of the supremacy of our civilisation, of its discoveries and inventions, which have brought us democratic institutions, respect for the human, civil, religious and political rights of our citizens, openness to diversity and tolerance of everything.

Ah, that same tolerance that lets him ram through a law in the Italian parliament to avoid being indicted on corruption charges. And that same tolerance that’s letting him to make another law making it possible for him to go on growing his massive business interests while also holding down the part-time job of Prime Minister.

People in the US like to complain, sometimes, about whether or not antitrust laws work. But imagine if Bill Gates was still head of Microsoft and President? How long would rival software companies last?

At least not every Eurotrash is so dumb. The EC President called ex-singer Berlusconi’s remarks racist, inflammatory and uneducated… the EU is based on values such as multiculturalism and the meeting of different civilisations.

I see that Berlusconi’s coalition involves racist and fascist political parties, while he has compared himself to Justinian, Napoleon and Jesus. And Berlusconi, who hides much of his money semi-legally in Switzerland to dodge tax, is keen to make it easier for banks to launder money. Which should come as a relief to all drug barons and terrorists everywhere.

Not bad for a guy who made his fortune selling TV porn and rode the erection wave all the way to political power. But surely he somehow forgot to compare himself Manilow and Sinatra as well, the arch-priests of megalomaniacal crooners.
