PT Barnum Says Hello

Plastic has this story on how Noted TV Psychic (!) John Edwards did one of his I See Dead People schtick with relatives of people who died on 9/11. This would have been a classic tasteless TV, but was canned at the last minute. What a shame.

What Edwards does is up close and personal exploitation of people’s grieving and fears about death. And for this he is rightly pilloried. But isn’t it just a degree or two away from what priests and other witchdoctors do when they keep themselves employed by relating events and tragedies to goings on in their magical Sugarcandy Mountain?

All praise the Sky God! Or the Earth God. Or the ones that live in water, or trees, or maybe Graceland?
