Throttling The Arse

Whew! Ever since Wired ran that story on the Arse Shooters, the daily visitors on this site spiked at 12K and then went to a steady-state of around 2-3K. Which made listening to my MP3s streamed from the server into work kind of difficult. So I had to throttle the IIS bandwidth down to 490K/s. Even though most of the MP3s are 160Kbps (some 128Kbps, some 192Kbps), with a heavy load I seemed to need around 250K/s bandwidth for uninterrupted play. But that seems to have receded… I can increase IIS’s bandwidth again. I found this excellent little server, the tiny/turbo/throttling HTTP server thttpd, that I might switch to, at least for the rich media downloads.
