So for Simone Ledeen and the other fresh-faced Republican recruits sent to Baghdad to re-engineer Iraq’s social and economic systems, there are no nation-building projects. All the available experience of various United Nations and other international organizations in rebuilding countries — some like East Timor or Somalia Rwanda in far worse shape than Iraq — counts for nought. By going it alone, spurning UN involvement and expertise, and then complaining that there are “no precedents”, they only advertise their ignorance.
