Mosquito Coast

Day 2 of my malaria prophylaxis medication, using the apparently psychoactive Lariam/mefloquine drug that can result in psychosis and “suicidal ideation” in a minority of users. I noticed a slight affect on balance and vision, but quite mild and transient. As psychoactives go it seems a bit wussy. Here’s hoping it has a stronger affect on the malaria parasites…

I’m on the Lariam right now. It seemed the right choice for me as I wasn’t arsed taking a daily tablet. No side affects so far or none that I can notice and I’ve been on it over a month now. There is alledgedly some resistance to Lariam in some parts of Thailand, Laos and Cambodia. I sure hope it works as I’ve been eaten alive despite my best attempts to cover up and use 50% Deet, which is probably way worse for me than the Lariam.

Can’t remember which one myself and Claudine took when we went to Borneo, but now I wonder if it was the “bad” one. I haven’t noticed any recent psychosis, though readers of my blog may beg to differ. Deet repellant always worked for me, unlike the “organic” ones – I tried a eucalyptus-based repellant once, and the insects were throwing themselves with lust at me.
