Peace In Our Time

So I read that peace has broken out in Iraq. Colin Powell, of course, is claiming that the tactically-effective-yet-politically-counter-productive warfare seige by US troops was the clincher. This is far from a victory, however, with the militias being allowed to melt away with weapons and pride intact, and now veterans of several failed US seiges. Most of the people in the know seem to be saying that the peace was brokered by the returning Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, who now seems happy to accommodate the stubborn Muqtada al-Sadr within an emerging Shia power structure with sway over large regions of southern Iraq.

This reminds me of the leadup to the 1979 Iranian Revolution. There, despite the best, bloodiest efforts by the pro-Western, moderately deranged Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, it was only the Lenin-like return and intercession of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini that brought totalitarian peace to an Iran spinning increasingly out of control, with dozens of different factions and private militias fighting for control.

Those Vagabond Blues

Finally moved into our little apartment in New York. After several months on the road and effectively homeless migrants, this comes as a great relief. Driving a huge U-Haul truck round and round Manhattan looking for parking took about as long as I expected, but was not quite as difficult. I noticed most people giving me a wide berth – they were scared and rightly so! We began the task of extracting our stuff from the boxy prisons it has been contained within for the past 2-3 months and re-assembling out lives into some sort of convenient, customary order. I look forward eagerly to a day when I can find some useful, necessary accessory just by quick habit and not be forced to go on an archeological expedition for 30-60 minutes through layers of boxed sediment. This will take some time…

We also sat in for 3.5 hours while the cable guy installed our new cable internet from RCN. Pretty fast: 7 MB/s download but only ~ 100 Kb/s upload. The upload better improve!

Asterix In Iraq

I recall reading Asterix in Britain, where the Romans managed to conquer England, apparently, by the clever strategy of only attacking the Britons while they were taking tea. Imagine my surprise, then, when I read of the cunning US strategy to concentrate attacks during al Sadr’s militia’s naptimes…

US forces announced a curfew Monday from 4 p.m. until 8 a.m. Yesterday, Mahdi Army officials called their own curfew, starting at 1 p.m., when their soldiers finish lunch and take naps. US forces are increasingly launching attacks at this time to take advantage of Mahdi Army vulnerability.

Back!

Back from Belize (old British Honduras) and am still successfully married. Despite repeated application of SPF 50 creams still got a tan, which is annoying. Saw lots of crazy fish and astounding Mayan city ruins which have given me a lot to think about. Am now hidden in a remote island retreat only several miles from the Canadian border. Drove a big boat in the Great Lakes and was tempted to officially invade Canada – they haven’t had an Irish Fenian invasion since 1866 and have probably grown slightly complacent… Set up Vonage VOIP service for Lisa to work, a very configurable telephone service that works without telephone lines, over broadband and is as wonderful as they say.
